Congressman Jim Gerlach Responds

I had somewhat good news today when a letter was received from Congressman Jim Gerlach, 6th District Pennsylvania. Hopefully, there will be progress made here. I have included the text of the letter received and the letter sent to Dr. Deyton below.

Dear Mr. Jaromnak:

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about the safety of fire safe cigarettes. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

As you may know, The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which became law on June 22, 2009, gives the Food and Drug Administration new regulatory oversight over cigarettes. Specifically, it creates a Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee within the Administration to provide advice, information, and recommendations to FDA on such issues as safety, dependence, or other health effects. As such, I am sending a copy of your correspondence to Dr. Lawrence Deyton, the Chairman of this Committee, for his further review and input.

Again, thank you for contacting me with your concerns, and I will be back in touch once we get a reply from Dr. Deyton.

_____

Dr. Lawrence Deyton
Chairman
Center For Tobacco Products
Food and Drug Administration
9200 Corporate Blvd.
Rockville, MD 20850

Dear Dr. Deyton:

Attached herewith is correspondence from David Jaromnak, a constituent of mine and the Director of Citizens Against Fire Safe Cigarettes. Mr. Jaromnak is concerned with the potentially harmful effects of "fire safe" cigarettes. I hope you will take the opportunity to review his correspondence, and provide me with your thoughts on the health-related concerns he raises regarding the product.

With kind regards, I am

Sincerely,

Jim Gerlach
Member of Congress

We have to keep fighting this! I think that we should file a class action lawsuit against our government on the grounds that this is against our constitutional rights! We were not givin a choice in this matter and people are getting sicker by the day! I will not tolerate this administration's dishonest, backdoor routine any longer!

why is it up to the government to tell us to smoke this or that? Haven't they done enough such as causing a world financial crisis and using our tax money to bail itself out? They force healthcare on us, tried to ban alcohol.
The FSC chemical is laced onto the tobacco b/c if you try to burn it... it won't combust... only the paper will.
We shouldn't allow only a few elect to make decisions for the 340 million U.S. citizens who work hard everyday for a living. Our political system is staged through the media... that qualified officials will never be elected for positions that really matter. Ron Paul please help us out.
Remember the 5th of November.

Is there anymore being done about this since the FDA started looking into this?

We need to coordinate this effort better. You should be accepting donations while putting together some kind of network. I would certainly donate.

The majority of the population has not yet been properly informed about what FSC is and it's effects upon the population.

I want more than the FDA looking into this!!! Come on guys aren't you outraged? We are being poisoned by a corrupt and evil government in more ways than one.

I believe we could turn those 10,000 signatures into 100,000 or even 1,000,000 with a focused coordinated effort.

How is the U.S. government - deliberately or inadvertently - poisoning millions of people not news?
I don't care who the people are. And if not news in this country, you would think in some other - if only to point to how wrong things have gone here.
Gives you some idea how marginalized we have become.
People: Double-edged sword or not, without the press, nothing will happen here.
For starters, we have to tell everyone we know who's affected.
But in the long run, that is only a start, it won't be enough.
We need a champion. Someone has to listen.

I sent the following to on-line press organization Breitbart (BigGovernment.com et al).

"I, and many others, are requesting an investigation into the oxymoron of FSC Cigarettes. Please see http://cafsc.blogspot.com/ . Unfortunately, smokers have been dismissed out of hand regarding this, with the answer being "just stop smoking."
We need you, a press that is not afraid of reporting the truth.

My high-level comparison is this: What if, to combat drunk driving, the EPA/FDA mandated a chemical be added to all alcoholic products to prevent one from becoming inebriated? This chemical, while negligibly harmful in small amounts, caused potentially fatal side-effects in large quantities. Would the reduction in DWIs justify such a requirement? Should the response be that one should refrain from drinking alcolohol if the additional chemicals made him/her ill?

Now, I circle back to reality. After the government mandated that cigarette manufacturers make FSC (fire safe cigarettes) products, the use of fire safe paper became standard. This paper is constructed by gluing two or three thin bands of less-porous paper together with an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer emulsion based adhesive (carpet glue). These papers have bands that act as inhibitors, so if the cigarette is left unattended it will self-extinguish.
The people who passed these laws believed that these cigarettes would limit the number of cigarette fire deaths. According to the Harvard School of Health, studies that compared FSC cigarettes versus regular cigarettes, the FSC cigarettes produced 13.9% more naphthalene and 11.4% more carbon monoxide than regular cigarettes. Naphthalene exposure in high amounts can result in headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, malaise, confusion, anemia, jaundice, convulsions, and coma.

Other facts:
* Fire-safe cigarettes extinguish themselves when not inhaled on for 30-35 seconds resulting in a smoker increasing the number of inhales on each cigarette smoked to keep the cigarette alight resulting in a greater intake of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide.

* FSC cigarettes, due to there design, have a tendency for the burning tip to drop off due to the decreased burn rate resulting in more ash and a greater chance to ignite a fire. Additionally, since the cigarette extinguishes itself, there is a greater chance of fire from matches and lighters used to relight cigarettes.

Please look into this matter. As of now, Breitbart is the only news media outlet that I respect enough to treat this matter seriously.

Sincerely,
...."

I sent letters to most of fox news commentators regarding this issue, hoping someone would take this subject on, 9-15-10. No reply.. I'm hoping someone does.. because the media is needed to spread the importance of it... not just a few but many people are against FSC... and something has to be done. It's like no one cares... we are people too.. american citzens...someone, please go get em! this is far more important than carrott sticks and apple slices.. wouldn't say??

Just sent a note to The Blaze (nothing back from Breitbart).
I included the link to this news article (from Huff Post, no less!)

Please be sure to read the accompanying documents provided by Ms. Brooks in the comments section.

I hope you do not mind, but I want to continue to let you all know where and what I have posted about this. Though I have no choice but to quit smoking at this point, I refuse to give up the fight to expose what the FDA/EPA has done.
My latest post was on "QuitNet," a support site for those who are quitting smoking. http://forums.quitnet.com/aspBanjo/Message_View.asp?Conference_ID=10&Forum_ID=53&Message_ID=15573165#15573165

I agree we need to stand up and fight being poisoned by our government. I'm a recovering addict and smoking FSC cigs reminds me of meth, the same weird taste, the tingling lips. I wonder why our government is mandating that we smoke poison

This website is long overdue an update.
We could also use our own forum.

The petition is now closed. All of them are, as far as I can tell.
The main one, with an original goal of 10,000, had collected 27,099 signatures, and - aside from being referenced in Rebecca Brooks' excellent Huffington Post article - apparently got us all exactly... nowhere.
As long as it was open there was some basis for hope that it would make a difference.
In fact, its only clear value seemed to be to get the word out to other smokers who had no idea about the issues with FSC cigarettes, since the response has otherwise been a resounding silence.
About the same result this site by the same author (as the main petition) is getting, but that - I reasoned until now - is still a kind of result: we know who won't respond and who won't take a stand, which is becoming a very long list.
Still, it's frustrating, and now disheartening.
Can the petitions, or at least the main one, be reopened with the names of the new governors-elect? Or was all of it, in fact, for nothing?
We don't even have a place to talk about this kind of thing, besides here, also 'that I know of.'
Does anyone have any direction in mind? Now what do we do?

SMOKER'S, a lot of you have been craftily deceived. Jeffrey Wigand's agenda, post "The Insider", is working closely with the FDA who have full control over tobacco. When I asked him personally (recently)about all the FSC cigarette illnesses, he denied knowing anything about it. That's funny, two years earlier in an e-mail I sent him that HE responded to, he thanked me for bringing the FSC cigarette illesses to his attention and that he would personally notify Dr. L a w r e n c e D e y t o n (HEAD LIAR @ FDA TOBACCO DIVISION). Wigand is a LIAR and is in bed with the FDA who are deliberately lacing cigarettes with new FSC chemicals to induce unorthodox illnesses to coerce smokers into quitting. It's not just the paper friends. They have added retardants to tobacco and believe it or not, Radio-Active material. Smokers in other countries are NOT experiencing this. WIGAND, the FDA and "Angel of Death" LAWRENCE DEYTON are EVIL NAZI bastards and should be convicted of crimes against American citizens. Kathleen Sebelius is also in on this. The needle is too good for these filthy scumbags. I have been calling the FDA for three years demanding an investigation and I am convinced that they are the ones behind this. They use the state law issue as a cover-up. They keep telling me it's out of their hands. Total BS. We need all of their heads on a stick.

Has anything been done with this in the last 11 years?

KellyJaye said...

No. The 'government' message received is that if you have an issue with what's being put in cigarettes, just quit.
