I had somewhat good news today when a letter was received from Congressman Jim Gerlach, 6th District Pennsylvania. Hopefully, there will be progress made here. I have included the text of the letter received and the letter sent to Dr. Deyton below.
Dear Mr. Jaromnak:
Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about the safety of fire safe cigarettes. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.
As you may know, The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which became law on June 22, 2009, gives the Food and Drug Administration new regulatory oversight over cigarettes. Specifically, it creates a Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee within the Administration to provide advice, information, and recommendations to FDA on such issues as safety, dependence, or other health effects. As such, I am sending a copy of your correspondence to Dr. Lawrence Deyton, the Chairman of this Committee, for his further review and input.
Again, thank you for contacting me with your concerns, and I will be back in touch once we get a reply from Dr. Deyton.

Dear Dr. Deyton:
Attached herewith is correspondence from David Jaromnak, a constituent of mine and the Director of Citizens Against Fire Safe Cigarettes. Mr. Jaromnak is concerned with the potentially harmful effects of "fire safe" cigarettes. I hope you will take the opportunity to review his correspondence, and provide me with your thoughts on the health-related concerns he raises regarding the product.
With kind regards, I am
Sincerely,
Jim Gerlach
Member of Congress

Get the Word Out on Twitter
Communication is the key to successfully educate our government officials and agencies. In addition to traditional mail and email to your elected officials, please tweet them on twitter. You can send links to this blog and the petition site. Try also to use #cafsc in your posts so others can see your posts. When you tweet, include some of these people in the post so they are informed. You would think that if enough people keep tweeting the government, somebody will take notice. Thank you!

Petition Letters Sent
Today, we have drafted and mailed a letter and copy of the petition to the following people:
President Barack Obama
Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D. (Commissioner FDA)
Governor Edward G. Rendell, Pennsylvania
Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr., Pennsylvania
Senator Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania
Congressman Jim Gerlach, 6th District, Pennsylvania
As of today over 26,000 people have signed the petition, which equates to about 50 people every single day since the petition was started in November 2008. Thank you very much for your testimonials and signatures. Since the FSC law has passed in every state, the National Government must intervene. We urge that everyone actively contact the President, and the Senators/Congressman from your state. Also please contact the FDA, as they can step in and create a regulation to ban FSC. Your emails, phone calls and letters will make a difference.

CAFSC Petition has reached 10000 signature goal
The CAFSC Petition reached the 10,000 goal on September 27, 2009. The goal was reached in 10 months and 2 weeks, which means the approximate average signature rate was 1,000 a month. I would like to thank everyone who signed the petition and would encourage everyone who has not signed it, to keep it going!
Sadly, 49 of the 50 states have passed these laws, with Wyoming the lone sane exception. Also, Carolina Cartons has stated that all cigarette manufacturers will be producing fire safe cigarettes by the end of 2009.
It is incredible that the attempt to save 700-800 people from cigarette fires, will cause illness and death of millions of more people. The shear number of stories on the Petition site alone is amble evidence that the laws must be repealed. Besides writing your state congressman and senators, I encourage everyone to contact their US congressman and the President. I think it will very well come to the President of the United States to put a stop to this insanity.
We have met our goal and we will be writing my governor to present the results to him. We also will make these results known to President Obama and the Food and Drug Administration.
Everyone, please do whatever you can to help the cause. You may write and refer to the petition site at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/repeal-fire-safe-cigarette-laws to your State Senators and representatives, your governor, your US congressmen and President Obama. Voices crying out, who refuse to be silenced will eventually be heard and great wrong and injustice will be swept away!

Medical Doctor or Scientist Support Needed
Thanks to all who are signing the petition, now over 1300 in 2 months at this writing. Besides support by signing the petition we need crucial support from a Scientist with a PH.D. and/or a medical doctor who is willing to come forward and offer their support for this petition. Combined with the signature of thousands of citizens bring real life testimony as evidence, a scientific paper written in support of a repeal of the FSC laws will destroy the Coalition for Fire Safe Cigarettes and reveal their colossal error. I am asking for ONE scientist or doctor to come forward. Please contact me at earnur@comcast.net. Such a person would be considered a hero, I am sure and the people who enacted these laws as clueless at best, evil at worst.

Carolina Cartons - Valued Ally!
I received this message from Carolina Cartons. While we wait to have the FSC laws repealed, I recommend them as an option for all smokers that refuse to smoke FSC.
David,
I added your link to our website.
We are one of the only places left online to purchase NON FSC cigarettes. Many of our customers have signed your petition, I recognize many of the names. We include your link in emails to our customers from time to time as well. I hope it helps. I created a logo for your link as well.
Feel free to use it for any link exchange you would like. I have attached it in this email.
Here is the link to your link on our site: http://www.carolinacartons.com/selfcigs_008.htm
We would appreciate you letting folks know that we can still supply them with NON FSC cigarettes for most all brands.
Thanks,
Rob
